Documents, versions and revisions¶
For: document controllers, engineers
One document, many versions¶
A document in Fluvial is the container — the thing with a document number and name. The versions (revisions) sit within it. The document is the thread; versions are the beads.

├── Rev B superseded issued 2026-05-14
└── Rev C current issued 2026-07-01
Revision names¶
Fluvial doesn't force a numbering convention on you — it follows yours:
- When you upload a new version, Fluvial suggests the next revision by
continuing your pattern: trailing digits increment with padding kept
(
T02→T03,3→4), and pure letters follow the standard doubling convention (Z→AA,CC→DD). - If your pattern is unusual, Fluvial suggests nothing rather than guessing — you type the revision yourself.
- Before issue, unusual revisions raise advisory warnings (e.g. "Expected next revision is C", "This revision has already been issued for this document"). Warnings never block issue — you know your project better than the software.
Once a version is issued, its revision name is locked permanently. The document's number and name remain editable at any time, and edits are audit-logged.
Document types¶
Every document carries a type — Drawing, Specification, Report, and so on — and drawings additionally carry a drawing type. Types drive filtering in the register and appear on register exports. Document and drawing types (if applicable) are automatically assigned for new documents upon upload to a draft transmittal.
Where new versions come from¶
Versions are always uploaded into a draft transmittal (see Upload documents). When the extracted or entered document number matches an existing register entry, the upload becomes that document's next version automatically. A number that's new to the project creates a new document.
Withdrawing¶
Withdrawing marks a document (or a single version) as no longer for use — it stays in the register, clearly flagged, and its history is preserved. Draft versions can't be withdrawn (delete them instead); see Withdraw a document or version. Withdrawn document versions are still available to download from an issued transmittal portal.
